Homemade Spray and Wash!

For about 10 years, I've been making my own laundry-pretreatment. I found the recipe in the Tightwad Gazette.  To make it easy on everyone, I buy a bottle of spray and wash and proceed to use it up.  That only takes a week or two around here.  (Yes, I spill on everything and everyone)

Then, I use the original container to make another batch.
With a funnel, pour in the following ingredients:
1/2 cup of wisk
1/2 cup of white vinegar
1/2 cup of ammonia
Add water up to the top.
Put on the lid and shake 'er up.

The real question is: does it work?  It does.  It does smell a little different than the original, which could cause some problems.  We once had a guest who asked to do some laundry.  Later she told me that she couldn't use the spray and wash because, "it smelled like vinegar!"  HA... that's one way to keep 'em out of your special stash of spray and wash!

Make your own.

Oh this is a great recipe. I make my own dishwashing detergent and laundry soap but love the idea of making my own spray and wash. Thanks for the recipe.

I'm going to have to try that! But what exactly is wisk? I've never heard of it. I thought your site was really cool and I want to add you to my blogroll at http://mommylounge.wordpress.com

I also make my own laundy deterent, do you think I could use that instead of the whisk deterget?

Washmom: I believe it is the "blueing agent" in the Wisk that you need to add to this combination. And I have no idea what a blueing agent is or how to make it. Now there's a question for our chemists out there. I am assuming the reason WISK was chosen for this is the concentration/ high quality of the detergent.

I bought the ingredients and will try it tonight! I am looking forward to seeing how it works on the great span of baby stains.

Wisk is the name of a laundry detergent sold in the United States manufactured by Sun Products

Anon-- does this make Wisk bad? Anything with a blueing agent should do the trick.

Why Wisk? Will other brands workk?

This seems odd to me. Vinegar is an acid and ammonia is a base. Acid + base makes water (I swear - that's basic chemistry). So basically, you're just pre-treating with diluted Whisk (sorry!).

Thanks. Saw this on pinterest and I'm going to give it a try today! We just ran out of ours. Love the header on your blog -- so funny!!!

I haven't studied the chemistry of these products, nor the expected result of their mixing as per this recipe, but I know that ONE product of MOST carbon-based chemical reactions is water (H2O); it isn't the ONLY end product, necessarily. It also depends on HOW acid or HOW basic each ingredient is, because their is a range of both. Thanks.

Oops I misspelled "there" as "their" on my previous post :b

Vinegar + ammonia = ammonium acetate and water, but in a stable form.

Not sure what cleaning properties it has, it's in L'Oreal hair coloring.
