I have a question for you guys!!

I am going to ask you a question and I want you to be HONEST.  You can sign your name anonymous if you don't want to be embarrassed, OK?

1. Do you exercise?

2. If you said, "yes"--what do you do and how often?

3. If you said, "no" what are a few of your hindrances to exercising?

4. Also, do you have any "mental hangups" that keep you from exercising?  (example: It's not a priority. or I'm too busy homeschooling)

Your answers are important to me because I am considering do some writing on helping people overcome mental obstacles for exercising--specifically mothers with many children.  I feel the Lord has given me a burden for this, so your answers would mean a lot to me.

Thanks!

I exercise 4-6 times a week at a wonderful gym with an awesome nursery for the kids.

Daycare for my kids was the biggest obstacle with exercise as I'm home alone with them so much. I really cherish and enjoy my two hour break. I also love the social aspect of a gym. It's nice to meet other people who are doing the same thing as I am (trying to lose weight or just stay healthy).

I feel it's really important because I'm setting a good example for my girls. 1) taking care of my body and 2) making time for myself.

I do not have any exercise equipment at home (primarily because or the cost and room it takes to store the equipment). I also don't want to go to a gym because the social aspect scares me. I have a lot of anxieties when it comes to being "social". I do however have a video game called "Yourself Fitness" and I find it quite enjoyable a few days a week for a half hour or so when my two children are napping. I like it because I do not like being away from my children for even a few hours. We also live about a half of a miles walk from a park we go to each day (as long as the weather permits). So as far as regular structured exercise, no I don't do that but I fit little things in when I can.

I try to exercise, but currently I'm not exercising. Reasons (excuses) why I'm not exercising...I'm 31 weeks pregnant (hey i think its a pretty good excuse) I have a 1 year old and a 3 year old and my husband is currently deployed and I have no one to watch the girls while I go to the gym. I try to walk around base (5 miles) at least 3 times a week so I guess thats pretty good exercise, but I dont always do it. Most of the time its because im just too tired. As soon as the baby is born and hubby is back home I will definatly be hitting the gym at least 5 times a week for about 2 hours at a time. Im gonna have some baby weight to loose

lucky for me I live with my parents and they are available to watch kids while I run. I try to run an average of 40-45 km a week (works out to 4 times a week) but I should try to do different exercises. I like running because it can be done in a short amount of time, it is cheap and can be done anywhere.

First, and most importantly, I clean my own house. I mean the cleaning that requires face to face relationships with the floor boards. I am certain that if more of our beloved nation cleaned their own homes and gardened we would not be facing the out of shape physical crisis that is gripping our country. Secondly, when my blood pressure is pushing higher limits I jog. I have never needed to exercise to keep off weight per se. However, I believe it's important for overall mental and physical health. I also do routine sit-ups and push-ups because I am vain. ;)

I walk three miles whenever I can but it is supposed to be 5 times a week. It takes me about an hour so that's a fairly average walking pace. When I made the goal of five times a week (see my 101 blog, or visit http://www.triplux.com/dayzero/ to see what this is all about) I was forgetting about how busy life is, how my husbands days off rotate, vacations, bad weather yadda yadda yadda. So I end up going out more like 3 times a week. Sometimes more.

So there you go! :)

Actually, I am obsessive about exercise. I adore exercise. (Can you tell from this that the answer to your first question is "yes"?) Before I got pregnant, I did an aerobics DVD every morning, and went to "Curves" (aerobic resistance training with hydraulic machines on a circuit) twice a week. You are supposed to do it for 30 minutes, but I almost always stay for 60. Since I've been feeling yucky, I've missed a lot of mornings on my DVD. I've missed several trips to Curves, too, but that's been more for family reasons. There have been sick kids, or home projects that have needed to be done. And then there's the hangup. My husband and I go to different gyms. He's an avid rock climber. I'm afraid of heights. So by the time we get through a gym night where I go, and then he goes, we've been apart for sometimes as many as five hours. We've had no family time to speak of that evening. We want to spend some quality time together, but it's late and time for bed. Lately, that's just seemed really rotten, so much so that we dread gym nights, even though we both love staying strong and healthy. We've tried to find ways to exercise as a family, but so far, nothing we've tried is anywhere near as intense as going to our gyms.

I work out at Curves 3-4 times a week. Curves works great for me.

Thanks for asking.

I like exercise, but it has to have a balance. In the past I have enjoyed aerobic videos. Lately, I have enjoyed going hiking, and playing "Ultimate Frisbee" and "Poison Tag" with hubby and kids. We also bike and walk together.

When it is cold or yucky out, we have created "work-out stations" in our home. We have someone running up and walking down the stairs. We have two people jumping rope in the kitchen. We have two people doing sprints in the living room (this is controlled running in the house). We have a pair doing sit-ups and push-ups. And someone doing their choice of favorite aerobic moves. Then we switch every five minutes (using oven timer)until we have completed thirty minutes (one circuit is done twice). We really like to put on some music (those Bible, grammar, Spanish and history learning songs have been fun) to keep us going!

Sometimes we have briskly walked around our house in a line with hymn books in hand to try to memorize a hymn. It works! We set the oven timer for thirty minutes to keep us going (and knowing it will end soon). I feel exercise needs a balance for the physical and spiritual.

Our biggest hindrances have been sickness, and broken bones (I broke my foot playing soccer with the kids). I also think exercise should be fun...your idea of fun...because if you think it is fun you will continue in it. However, variety is also important. Wow! Did I write all of this about exercise? Well, I better get off the computer (sometimes a hindrance to exercise) and get moving! LOL!

No. I enjoy the way I feel when I exercise, but I haven't done much in the past year. The road is too busy for walking. I used to use a rebounder, and I actually enjoy doing that. I've had a hard time being consistent with exercise in the past because it's not fun for me, and I feel that there are so many other things I could be doing... But we don't have room in this apartment for the rebounder. If we move in the next couple months as we are hoping to, I will both have room for the rebounder, and also have a place to walk on the road with the stroller or Abigail on me in a wrap. I look forward to that. I could go to the park or mall to walk now, but I don't because it's really not as much of a priority as it should be.

Yes, every couple of days. I go to a women's-only gym 1/2 mile from our house (only thing is DH has to be home to watch the little guy), and go on occasional walks. We did get a bike trailer recently, but I haven't gotten it out in a couple of weeks...

1. Yes
2. T-Tapp DVDs are my mainstay. Some are as short as 15 or 20 minutes (I used the 15 minute "Basic Workout Plus" to get started & build up my strength), others I use go up to about an hour. I start out doing a "boot camp" of one or the workouts daily for four to fourteen days. Then I workout every other day for a few weeks, then every third day another few weeks, then a couple times a week, then I taper off and start over with another "boot camp" and start the whole cycle again. I have too many children now, of various ages, to leave them in child care at a gym, so I love workouts I can do at home. Also, I am in my mid-forties, and have some injuries and back problems that prevent me from using a lot of the gym equipment that I used to use without trouble. The claims of inch loss and relief from back pain on the T-Tapp website have proven to be true for me. I was very skeptical before a friend loaned me one of her T-Tapp DVDs. I also like to take walks with my husband and six children, and love to jump on my Needak rebounder.
4. I sometimes have trouble getting up early to do my workouts. I am most faithful to my exercise program when I get up and workout in the morning. If I plan on an afternoon workout, it will often get squeezed by our home schooling or other urgent tasks, or I will have spent too much energy by the time I get around to it to force myself to work out.

Hi! I just found your blog... I would love a post on how to overcome "mental hangups." I was always naturally thin - without any extra exercise other than chasing the kids around. Then I had my third baby (who's now 2.5!) and I gained weight. Then we moved from Sunny Southern California to Snowy 6 months of the year Utah. And I don't get nearly as much exercise, and I've gained even more weight:-(

We recently bought a treadmill... but I just have issues with "doing it". My biggest excuse is I just don't have time. It is an excuse and I know it:-(

Love your blog!

Hi Jena!
My husband told me about your blog, so I decided to look you up.
I do exercise every week. My goal is 5 times a week, but often its just 4. I swim 3 mornings a week, and then run twice a week. I have 3 little kids, so the only way it works for me is to get up and go early in the morning, while they are still sleeping. I swim at 5:00. I run one weekday morning, and then we run as a family on Saturdays. We go to the local high school track. The kids will sometimes go around the track with us, or they will just play. The track is fenced in, and we are always within 1/10 of a mile of them.=)
I think exercise and fitness takes discipline. It isn't a 3 step process to always be in shape. Its hard work. To eat right, to get enough sleep, and to not give up if you miss a day, or a week. It isn't easy. Ever. But it is rewarding.
Anyway, thanks for the blog.
